I’ve come across an old military issue hole repair kit. It’s full of woody resins, hardners, body filler and Gardner, fiberglass mats and other various items. The only year I could find on any of the paper work was 1991. The resins and hardeners are still liquid, but mollases consistency. They have been in a temperature controlled shop for,at least the last 10 years. I know the mats are fine, what about the resins and hardners?
Is this just a completly stupid question? I suppose ill just mix a little up and see if it sets up…
Normal resins have a year or so shelf life, has it crystalized? Mix a bit and see it sets up but I personally wouldn"t use it
The stuff is so old, that probably no-one can judge it, hence no reaction. Which is not a reason for itchy remarks. This forum is not a 4-hour service centre.
Personally I would toss it, and buy new.
Resins usually have 12 month use by date, but i have used resin over 5 years old,but only for for general bonding and warmed resin up which came clear,if stored and sealed correctly I would use,but never for structural or when a clear finish is required, but at your own risk.I would not use now, just buy some more just in case.
First off thanks for reporting the spam post Herman.
Secondly scrnic1, don’t get offended if no one answers right away! A lot of people here are very busy with their work and family lives so sometimes responses are slow.
Old resins are hit and miss, even if it does harden I would expect reduced physical properties.
I wouldnt use any resins in an unsealed can older than 3 months. New in the can, 1 year.
Sorry if i came off sounding whinny or upset guys! I really wasnt! I thought it might have actually been a dumb question:o Im not devoid of my own logic and intend to see if a dab or two might set up properly since it hasnt cost me anything, and i did score some nice heavy woven mat, and some other nice pieces of mat in the kit. Thanks for your responses! Ill be back periodicly to ask some more questions once i get moved this month, and have a garage to work in!!! Pretty excited about that! I have all the supplies(new) to build a fiberglass bumper once im setteled in the new place. Thanks again for the responses, and again, sorry for the misunderstood tone;)
No problem scrnic1! Glad you’re learning something!
