sheet wax

Hi guys. i working with sheet wax to make a mold but i needed to know how you manage to get a perfect surface finish prior to applying the gelcoat, i’m working with freemans wax sheets and i was planning on applying some spray filler on top to build up a layer which i can then polish but i’m not sure if this approach will work. please share your experieces as i’ve hit a dead. if this works it will same me tons of work needed with polishing the mold trying to get rid of any imperfections.

i’ve been to my local paint supplier and they dont have any spray filler in stock but they were suggesting i get filler primer which i’m not sure it was going to work.

any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I don’t think you’re gonna get a perfect finish with sheet wax. The seam lines can be blended fairly well but sheet wax isn’t glass or polished metal so you’ll be hard pressed to get that class A finish. You can spray it with duratec but, since it’s wax it’s not going to want to stay put well while you press down on it during sanding.

You can reverse your mold so the sheet wax is on the inside, then the mold can give you the good finish. If you’re mold is already made then that would mean remaking it as a male if it’s female and vice versa.

If you’re doing this to try to fix the mold then, you should just fix the mold or remake it.

Generally you’ll put in sheet wax to give you a thickness of the laminate that will be laid up in order to make a back side for a light rtm mold or clam shell mold.
