shatter resistance?

what can I do to make a part more shatter resistant?

I am designing a roof for a car that you will cut out most of the top metal section with leaving some of the innerds intact and with a rather extensive carge. Our concern is if in case of a rollover the roof shattering and sending shards of carbon at the driver.

Any help will be great

i guess I can tell you my layup.

I am tring to make this as inexpensive for the customer on this round he is buying.

Here is the layup

gelcoat
2 layers of 5.7oz plain weave
foam core
2 layers of 5.7oz plain weave

I will be using VER resin but dont know what type yet

I am using the plain weave carbon in the 5.7oz because I have several hundred yards of it so I don’t have to order anything in.

Please let me know what I can change up or what I can do to make it more shatter resistant

What car is this for?

Use kevlar on the bottom side. It will help contain any pieces that break off.

it is for the E46 m3 that I am building this for. If I can get it for what they need I will be doing a 350z replacement as well.

Thank you very much for that. Now that you said it, it makes sense!

They are already available for the E46 M3. I had one on my old car. A lot of work (and $) to install. Didn’t like it, and got another stock car.

How are you going to bond this new composite roof to the existing car roof frame?

You may want to check out the bonding adhesive that GM uses to bond steel roof structures in place… I have seen tests done with this adhesive done on sheetmetal panels… the panel actually bends and fatigues and the adhesive portion suffers no damage or loss of integrity. I am not sure how well it bonds to composite products though. Perhaps a test would tell you that. My guess is you would have to buy it from the GM dealership bodyshop.

I think they are already aware of that but they wanted it from me and they are willing to pay so I am willing to make lol

who makes them? I probally can take some pointers off it as well. I doubt I will production sell it cause I dont want the liability but it would be cool to see it.

kevlar or spectra fiber (et al) as the skin layers

You can also try hybrid fibers (cf/kevlar) to help with weight and shatter resistance.
