Seperated Epoxy Resin

I pulled out a bottle of System 3 epoxy to fix a crack in my buddy’s fender last night and it had seperated. I hadn’t used it in a year and it was only about 10% full. So there was a lot of air in the bottle. Hard white stuff was on the bottom and regular-looking resin was on top. I needed to do this repair now and couldn’t wait a week to order new stuff so I used it anyway. The hardener looked good and I mixed it at the normal 2-1 ratio.

So do you think I’m going to have to redo the repair or do you think there is a possibility it will hold? I don’t know what to tell my buddy…

I remember reading somewhere if you put the resin container into some hot water that the hard white part will mix back into the rest of the resin.Came on a spec sheet with some epoxy a bought a while ago if I remember correctly.Worth a try

Sounds like some of the resin crystalized out. Often one of the epoxies in a blend will be more liable to crystalize than others. If you have one epoxy crystalized out and just use the fluid layer then you don’t know the proper mix ratio. The thing to do is warm up the epoxy carefully and mix it thouroughly.

The epoxy needs to be remixed before using it! Using just the “liquid” part is totally unacceptable IMO.
Just heat it up to 100* for a while and stir it well.

sounds like we are both having epoxy problems today:D

i had enough hardener but not enough resin… so i found a different brand of resin on my shelf and tried the combo… I think it is still trying to cure lol. 10 hours later… very slow cure compared to the right brand of resin.
