semi permanet mold release

Any one who use semi-permanet mold release? does gel coat pool on the mold or it’s just me? because after I follow all the steps of applying semi-mold release, my gel coat start to pool on my mold. will it cause problem to the part?

That can happen with pretty much any mold release we have tried.

How are you applying the gel coat? Brush or spray on?

I brush it on, it did happen when I use wax mold release.

Try putting it on thicker, and only brush in one direction.

we use semi permanent mould release… it doesnt pool, we just apply it with a rag and wait for it to haze then buff it off… its fantastic.
(altho sometimes a little too good… applied 6 coats to a plug that was going to be a two part mould, did the first side and when rolled over the plug simply FELL out of the mould.)

I don’t think the OP has a problem with the actual mold release pooling. The gelcoat is what is pooling.
Manufacturers often have different types of mold releases to solve the problems. There are even some releases that are very slightly tacky to hold fabric in place.

couldnt you just use a wax free gelcoat so itd remain tacky?

its a good idea though.

reading down i see that you brush on your gelcoat, is there any way you could switch to spraying? ive never had any pooling problems once i started spraying and you get more even coverage, well i think so.

The reason why I brush instead of spray was because it’s a pretty small mold. I’ve try to wet layup in the pooled gelcoat, it turned out just fine.

never had any issues spraying… although my mold surfaces are about 20 sq. ft.
