semi permanant release

hi,

in the past ive had trouble getting semi permanants to work well, i was following the instructions to the tee. i eventually went back to wax. i was mould cleaning, sealant, the semi permanat 6 times. stil had some nightmare stick ups!

only now i look back and realized i was not polishing any moulds before using semi permanant.

could someone tell me if this is a crucial part of the process? if so to convert my wax moulds to semi permanant should i…

strip of wax with mould cleaner, then polish, then semi permanat

or just polish then semi permanant cause its most like gunna strip off the wax anyway.

thank for the help guys, great site!!

First off, not all mold surfaces and layup resins work with semi-permanents. I’ve had several combinations on highly polished molds that would stick. Change the layup resin and the release is beautiful.

Typically, with semis a polished mold will release better than a rough mold.

Polishing is the best way to remove the wax in the present mold. I usually use a wax and grease remover, then polish, then apply sealer and release.

im using gelcoat will that make a difference?

i guess you suggest a test patch to be sure before using?

Most definitely! A test patch with your mold surface coat and layup resin will tell you a lot. Polish the test patch just like you plan to polish the mold.
