Seasons greetings from the Isle of Wight

About time I said hello. Boatbuilding background with Americas Cup/Super yacht & Racing yacht projects compleated over the past 25 years. Have an interest now in focusing more on smaller projects such as bespoke composite furniture/art work.

Welcome to the forums! Did you used to build composite boats and if so I’d love to see pictures! How’d they do in races?

Thank you for the welcome, plenty of boats over the years both large and small fast and slow. A few easy to find web pics of past projects I have been involved with.

Me 2010/2011 I have just finished building the mould here for the Quant 28 and am covering with Mylar film prior to the carbon skin and foam core which are wet layed and vacuumed. Please note this is NOT in my workshop.

Here it is layed up just starting to be faired up

Google Quant 28 for further pics and video

M/Y Spirit (composite construction) heavily involved on shopfloor and later moved on as certification engineer involved with survey requirments, composite engineering by High Modulus NZ

Interior fancy spiral staircase I was involved with, composite with a carbon dress covering.

I have a young Autistic child which has lead to a major shift in my priorities and I no longer wish to be involved in large time consuming projects. I have a small workshop 1000 sq-feet and now focus on mould making and producing small parts for others. Currently time is split working on some kayak parts, carbon/timber tables and some experiments with carbon jewellery.

Nice stairs! Where you involved with green marine at times?

Hello susho, indirectly I have done work for green marine but it was around 15 years ago, lifeboat parts, subcontracted.

Wow! Beautiful!

I spent some of my best years on the Isle of Wight (Cowes), Awesome place, built a few boats there too but usually worked in europe or whereever work took me then back to Cowes for summer. Party time!! 1992- 2000. Also worked at green marine with the last of the volvo 60’s (Assa Abloy)

Hi Brad during those years I was working in Cowes also, perhaps are paths crossed at Vision yachts/Souters or FBM marine? In 2000 I headed off to New Zealand and spent five fantastic years working out there. Hows life in Queensland?

Early on I was looking after the etchells at shepards wharf with Harleys also did a bit with Steve Mellors at Tropical Engineering, did the plug work for the Reflex 28 and worked on a minitransat for Stimson at the marina. Lifes pretty good here, very busy with work and am happy to be on holidays now!!

Steve Mellors is a bit of a composite guru, I worked with him at Vision yachts on a couple of racing yacht builds and a few carbon spars for the AC boats around the late 80’s early 90’s . He used to get the engineers in from westland aerospace (now GKN) stop by to see how he made some of the parts.

Enjoy the holidays.
