scraps

what do you guys do with your scrap carbon and such. i mean pieces that are too small to make anything out of.

is there any use for it?

Don’t know what size scraps you have but I’ll make coasters for drinks and candles, pencil/pen holders, divot tools for golf, money clips, anything small that I can use. The cork was $10 for 2’x4’ from the local craft store and I just use 3M Hi-Strength 90 for bonding because it is WAY stronger then Super 77.

I like that, if i have small scrap i chop the cardon up into small strands and use it in mu mold making

I’m planning on laminating them all on miscellaneous surfaces like wall art thats 3-d. Like over things that I can hang on my shop walls for conversation pieces. Wheels halves, unusual fenders with vents , old driving shoes, vintage steering wheels, etc.

Use the scraps for your next mold build.

I do like that idea

Rotorage: I just took a close look at your plate that the candle is on. How did you make that checker board pattern of the alternating weave direction? Was the carbon cut into small squares then pieced together or another method? Looks pretty cool!

It’s actually woven in that pattern and can play tricks with your eyes. One moment it looks like the checkerboard and another it looks like a diamond pattern, all depends on how you focus on it.

You can get it from Fibreglast. http://www.fibreglast.com/category/Patterned_Carbon_Fiber

Here is a better shot of the material after demold. If you look at the left side you can see what I mean by it looking like a diamond pattern.

Canyon - This pic is already uploaded for another thread how do I get it to show up in the small preview box so the user can click on it to enlarge it, just like if I uploaded the pic to the site for this post. Hope that makes sense, I just don’t want people to have to use the left and right scroll bar. On other forums it bugs me when a pic is to large for the screen skewing that thread so you need to scroll left and right just to read the posts.

Hey,
Thanks for the PM. I changed the options to allow you to reattach the same image so you won’t get that error anymore. Sorry for the trouble.

Thank you very much for the link. I didn’t know that fiberglast carried carbon in different weaves. Now to figure out what I want to make with it…

You can also get some crazy stuff from these guys in Japan like Iridium coated, Chrome coated, custom weaves, and Uni with colored PET.
