Satin/matte finish

So some other user asked this question but there was nothing in the body. My question is how to get a satin look while still having uv protection.

I’ve tried automotive clear with a matte additive, however being in non ideal spraying conditions and also talent leaves me with a not so great finish since I have orange peel and dust nibs.

My only thought of getting a better finish would be to clear coat and just sand with 3000 and not buff.

Does anyone have suggestions?

Anybody have some input?

Although you have the orange peel, is the finish matte ? Sounds like you need to reduce the paint volume and paint finer coats and wait between coats to let the solvents flash off. Practice on a scrap piece of carbon if you can.

Yeah it’s matte. My gun wasn’t flowing properly so it wasn’t laying down flat. Either that or my air pressure was to high and the clear was bouncing off the panel.

I’ve done quite a few satin finished parts by wet sanding the gloss clear with 800 and then lightly waxing. As long as you just wipe the wax off without buffing I get a nice satin finish and the customers have been very happy. Another advantage is that it’s very easy to fix scuffs or light scratches by just sanding them back and waxing again.

I asked the same question a while back, I have since tried two methods with varying results. First is to prepare the mold with Partall film from a spray gun, the last layer I will lower the air pressure which leaves a matte or “pebbled” finish in the mold. As long as the part does not require any surface sanding, this method will give a matte finish. If sanding is required, I will follow up with a matte clear from a company named Cerakote. My parts are firearms related, and I am sure there is a automotive matte clear that may work as well for less $$ or more readily available in your area.

Yeah I think since my molds are less then ideal and also my spray atmosphere is not great either I need some wet sanding afterwards.

I actually had good results with 1000 grit but tried the wax idea and it just kind of made things worse. Maybe since I was using tr1 mold release wax and not some other type. Maybe tomorrow if someone replies I’ll pick up some cheap squirt bottle car wax and give it another go.
