So i was sanding my pretty carbon layer before i applied a gloss layer of resin and ended up sanding through the first layer of carbon. Anyway to fix this without making it really ugly? Trying to avoid painting it.
There is nothing really, except applying a new layer of cf. more simple is to accept it, don’t sand any further, apply epoxy (or clear coat), sand again (not trough the coat this time, and finish it, or just apply final coat if thats good enough.
Can the whole top be coated in resin or do i need to fill those spots with resin first, get them flush and then coat the whole top?
you could just paint it over with resin, maybe a few layers, to get it built up. just scuff it up around the area your gonna paint, mask it though, and then paint it. Let cure. Sand back some and repeat. YOu’ll have to fair the edges in. It’ll fix the surface but you’ll see the damaged area under the resin obviously.
To fix it and make it look like before, you’d have to grind down, scarf the area, and then apply a patch. I’ve done it for repairs but, it’s not the easiest thing to do nor fast. And if your part is thin, it’s not worth the risk.
What’s the best way to avoid this happening? I’ve done some overlays or skinning where I have done this. It’s quite aggravating. I just try and brush on the epoxy as evenly as I can with multiple coats but it still happens when wet sanding sometimes.
Use more epoxy. Lightly sand between a few coats and add more. Repeat until it’s built up enough so that you don’t go through.
I’d just work over it. If its dead center on the most visible part then I’d do it over. If thats an overlay part I’d brush on new layer of clear resin, then a few extra layers in that area to try to flush it out, then a few more layers over the entire panel to blend it. If thats a part out of the mold I’d duratech it, then fill in the patches, then duratech it again to blend everything. Use clear resin or duratech like filler primer. Use it to fill your imperfections.
