resing tinting question

I’ve seen all the fiberglass used in c/f work tinted black… i know its mixed in the resin, but is that after the 1st peice of the part in c/f is laied and tacked up? cause wouldnt the tinted resin have the chance of soaking thru and clouding the finish of the c/f if it was used on it?
Also can graphite be used to tint the resin or only sillica?

hey Robby,

What you’re looking at is probably paint and not tinting of the resin. It’s very common to take the finished part and paint the backside black. Tinting the resin is another option but color pigment isn’t cheap so I doubt most people would do that. Besides, as you’re adding pigment to the resin… you need to adjust the amount of catalyst used or else your resin might not cure at all.

Graphite is used to thicken the resin but not really tint it. There are black pigments as well as an array of many other colors that you can pick from.
