Hey guys so last night was my first time making some molds off painted car parts. I used wax and pva to ensure they wouldnt stick, and epoxy tooling gel but once i peeled them out of the molds i noticed that one of them had some paint peeling off of it.
i took into account that it could peel but didnt think it would so easily. is there anything i could use to prevent this from happening again???
It depends. The paint could have been pealing from other reasons. At what temperature did you cure the mold at? What kind of paint was on the part?
How did you PVA the part? You must have not put enough PVA on.
Any pictures? That would help solve the problem.
Always factor into the job a new paint job for the plug if it’s a real part. Or paint the disposable plug with duratec.
Well they were stock parts off a Honda. Had the original factory paint on it. After taking a closer look, the clear coat looked quite thin. I used a spray on the pva. It was cured at room temperature. With a more pva and a thicker clear on the original part, will that help?? I’ll upload some pics soon as I get a moment
Correct me if im wrong but doesn’t Honda use singe stage paint? I had the same peoblm when I made a mold off of a stock Honda part…
That would make sense. Now that you say that. But any parts that have a proper clear coat on it shouldn’t peel should they??
It depends. If you leave wet resn over anything long enough it would peel as well. In your situation who I’d do is brush the gel coat over the part, then ramp up the temperature so it can gel quick enough to not peel or alligator. I wouldn’t go over 100f though.
