resin question

I got some airtech strechlon film samples they sent me to test if it will work with my PER or VER. It is the 800 series. It says it is recommended for epoxies and BMI resins, what are BMI Resins?? It also says not recommended for phenolic resins and I don’t know what that is either. Any help will be appreciated. The SL200 is what most people use with epoxies but the is thicker and a little less strechy. I probally know what they are but never heard them refered to by those names

Where’s Evan when you need him

I also posted this over on the Fiberglast forum…

Bismaleimide (BMI) resin:

Thermoplastic plastic based on polyimide resin or thermoset bismaleimide (BMI) resin. Aromatic polyimides are among the most thermally stable organic materials known. Dupont’s Kapton® film materials are an example of polyimide material. Polyimides thermoplastic and BMI thermoset resins have high temperature resistance. Bismaleimide (BMI) resins have processing characteristics similar to epoxy resins and are applied as composite neat resins.

thank you very much!

I’m here… just don’t know what the heck you’re talking about. But now I know. I never knew they were called BMI resin. Everything I’ve read refer to them as something generic.

Which is kind of dumb because you normally inject with BMI resin anyway, not laminating.

yeah that is what I thought, yeah I never heard it refered to that. I used that UV activated resin for the first time that GGROP gave me when I was down there. It cured rock hard in about 15 minutes sitting outside. Amazing stuff

have you seen the UV activated pre-preg that you can store at room temp, 1 year shelf life and cure time is about 3 minutes per layer up to 10 layers

Are you talking about the stuff from Australia that is supposed to be fire retardant? I’ve been meaning to call them but keep forgetting. Have you talked to them and get more information?

yeah, they are sending me a packet with a brochure and pricing, Hopefully it will have a sample of the material. They have a special foil bag you have to keep it in but other then that, that is all I know

Doesn’t look like you can order carbon though.

in their FAQ’s it states this

How is the product supplied ?

The prepregs are supplied in 40 - 50Kg rolls sealed in a foil bag cartonised and palletised. The width of the product can vary between 1000mm - 1270mm

that is crazy they have it in poly as well, and the epoxy will be out later this fall

I see what you are saying, they said carbon and carbon kevlar as well when they emailed me

Oh, I thought they only make it in e-glass. I hope I don’t have to buy a freagin pallet at a time though. Time for a group buy

yeah no crap, they say E-glass and Aramid reinforcements in their ad as well

here is a deck lid I made today, sprayed gel coat about 10:30 laid fiberglass at 12:00 cured at 12:30 and had to wait about an hour and a half longer for the gel coat to cure enough that I could pop it. That UV resin is awesome!!!

I have just the UV additive by itself. You can mix it with whatever resin that you’re comfortable with using. It’s cool but I only use it once in a while.

I am going to use it for mainly my fiberglass parts
