Repair Carbon Fiber Hood

I have a carbon fiber hood from FIber Images a very good name in carbon fiber. I had a mishap and i need to repair a small surface crack and the outer seem front and back, the internal skeleton is still sound. It doesnt look like a fiberglass that attaches the carbon fiber out skin to the inner fiberglass shell, it looks like a hardened glue or something. I accidentally forgot to latch the hood and at 30MPH the hood flew up, i was just to damn excited about this new tranny i just through in and some ho forgot.

I built the whole car myself and really cant believe this happent, seriously i feel so stupid.

Any help locating this glue or resin would be great,

thanks guys for all your help,

Great forums lots of good info.

Steven

a very good name in carbon fiber hahahahahahahahahahah did he seriously say that !! I would use a structual adhesive

The “glue” you’re referring to is nothing more than laminating resin + cabosil. As for Fiber Images, if you’re happy with their product then that’s all that matters.

 I HAD a Fiber images hood once. It was given to me at which point I gave it away to someone else.

Can you post a pic of the damage and your location. If you’re anywhere near Norfolk, VA I might be able to repair it for you.

Before buying the hood i looked at everything available at the time, and by far FiberImages was the best. This was about 2 years ago and im not certain if there quality is what it use to be.

Where can i locate laminating resin + cabosil in a hurry? Whats the best way to use this stuff? Instructions would be great, just trying to get into small cf crafting and never actually done anything as of today.

Thanks guys for your time/help,

Steven Eliuk

laminating resin + cabosil + milled fiber(equal parts cabosil to milled fiber), but how much laminating resin to use?

I find articles on this stuff but nobody actually selling it, any links?

thanks for your time

I believe Evan sells composite materials  www.icancomposites.com

If you’re in a big hurry, most boating supply stores carry all the materials at very inflated prices - West Marine, Boat US, etc. A company called System Three (http://www.systemthree.com/ Once you register, go to the section called Literature & catalogs) has a good manual called The Epoxy Book that you can download from their site (if you register). It explains all the fillers (cabosil to milled fiber) and most general questions regarding bonding and laminating. Evan sells some of their materials at his e-store (http://www.icancomposites.com/index.php)

If you have time, I highly recommend the products Evan sells for excellent prices.

yeah, not meaning to dog fiber images on their stuff, but in the carbon fiber business ViS and Fiber Images are lower line stuff but they are affordable. Most people won’t pay $1,500 for a hood but they also only weigh a couple pounds and are designed for different applications

i cant even FIND let alone purchase a hood other than the shitty ass vis/fiber images style hoods.

i saw the sparco evo8 up close a few weeks ago…drooled on the hood and rear trunk.

for most people a fiber images hood would be fine, because all they really want is the carbon look, but if I was buying it for functionallity, they would be one of the last ones I would buy
