Release Film as an alternative to PVA and Wax

Hi Composite Experts,

I can not obtain PVA release here in Hawaii. Last night my first infusion I tried using car wax, and that did not work out very well either. I am using a glass mold, and am doing a simple infusion using glass twill.

Can I put a sheet of release film on the bottom of my layup as well on the top, so that I can remove the infusion from the mold, since I don’t have wax or PVA release agent. Is there any drawbacks doing it this way?

I’ve done it before with vac bag when I’ve been to lazy to seal and release plate. It can work but the bag can move meaning your laminate will move with it and it can get wrinkles in it.

I am glad that it can work. In order to minimize the effect of the release film moving on the bottom, what do you think about taping/gluing the release film to the glass mold.

The easiest way to use a vacuum bag as a release is to use the stretchlon vacuum bag. lay the bag down, and then pull a vacuum between it and the tooling surface, and should conform well to the mold and you also shouldn’t have any creases/pleats (if you lay the bag without any slack).

Is it not possible to get PVA shipped to Hawaii?

Hawaii has UPS… Pva is not a hazardous material … You can order as much as you want without a second thought.

In Europe PVA is hazmat. Check before you buy!

Started using it. Holy crap it’s amazing. It’s water-based, and very safe to use. I doubt there is any hazmat issues with it. 20x better than Frekot I think!

Yes, a certain website would not ship PVA to me. They had no problem shipping Epoxy though.

When I order it they don’t hit me with the hazmat fee… like with VE.
