Hi fellows i’m looking for your feedback, on videos to learn composites. i’ve seen some old ones but love to hear from you’re top 3 reconmendations. Thanks.
Thats a tough question to ask, without knowing what you’ve done in the past. If you’ve never mixed any resin, your best bet is to go and get some material and a piece of glass and some car wax and start goofing off.
Freeman supply has a free dvd that showcases their product line. Long, but goes through and shows what can be done to speed up the art of making stuff out of fossilized snot.
fiberglast has some good online videos, some of them dated that get into plug making, and gelcoating.
West systems has a few videos about basic layup, and repairs that show how each step is done. Jamestown Distributors has short clips about products how some of them work. West Systems, Gougeon brothers has a good book about epoxy layup and cold molded plywood construction that gets into fairing out hulls, that translates into plugs and other parts.
Cook Composites has the “Cook Book” that is the starting point for all polyester work in the known universe. It assumes you know what you are thinking about when you open the first page.
For cloth layup schedules, you are pretty much on your own when it comes to building something and trying it out. For boats, The Element’s of Boat Strength by Dave Gerr gives suggested laminate schedules for different parts, along with coring recommendation. Doesn’t do you much good unless you are building a boat.
For coring, DIAB has a few good PDF files on their materials. Nida-core has a lot of videos about their products… but they are not how to videos.
Thanks for the reply.
I think Airtech also has some videos on their website. Do a youtube search for them possibly. Youtube has tons of good ones, some bad ones. However, the more you see, the more you will understand. Composites World journal should have a wealth of knowledge. I think they have into in their Source Book as well online. Come here for any questions you need, we are always glad to help!
