Rear wing plug advice?

Hi guys, Im trying something a little new these days, Some of the locals have been requesting a carbon part. So within the last couple of weeks I have been making the part. Now it has a foam core but the outer part is shaped and sanded using Bondo. I am almost to my finishing stages and would like a little advice. Will bondo hold up to the heat of the gel coat and structural backings? Also I have been reading that alot of people are primering, then Rustolium the plug and polishing for the gelcoat? what is the best way to finish it? Thank you everyone!

short answers… yes bondo will hold against the heat… its usually better to use the fiberglass green goop over bondo FYI… properties in it are better… and clear coat is better vs gel coat IMO but everyone has there own opinion on finishing a part

The downside to use Rustoleum to finish your plug is that your are relegated to using PVA to make to the mold. Wax alone will not provide a sufficient release and a semi-permanent release system will not work on top of single component paints/rattle cans.

Thank you guys, instead of using Rustoleum, what is better to finish it with? also the Tooling gel and all the heat will not ruin the distort the bondo? You guys are awesome thank you for the help!

You can use Rustoleum but will then have to use PVA.

I like to use 2-component (2K) urethanes products like PPG Deltron DC3000 to prep my plugs. I can then use a semi-permanent release system to make the mold. Unfortunately, most 2K paints are rather expensive. I’ve read that some people have used very well cured 2K paints and just wax…but I have personally never tried it.

Bondo is a filled polyester resin. The chances of the rest warping from the heat is greater then the Bondo warping. If you are concerned about the heat then you can do the polyester mold layup in stages rather than all at once. I have seen polyester layups get hot enough melt release waxes.
