R33 GTR Carbon Exhaust Shield

Hello guys,

One piece we have done. We are still fairly new to resin infusion.

Part is from an R33 GTR. 3 layers 200gram carbon. Found the edges slightly dry when trimming - not sure if this is a common thing or from using the dreaded polyester resin

Sprayed with a rattle can, however still needs sanding back and another clear coat.

Nice work!
I would be concerned though with the hot environment this part should live at.

Thanks for the nice words.

We are hoping to run some tests to see how this part gets along.

Hopefully no flamethrower exhausts

What max temp can the resin hold? Parts look nice  Good job

Not high enough I dont think. Heat gun is the way forward to test this one

Typical exhaust gases temp… 300c?

Edit: Some say 700c!

Pre turbo temps might be as high as 900C but I would be surprised if the exhaust gas was over 100C by the time it exited the vehicle. There is allot of heat loss along the exhaust tract. The outer edges of the tip definitely aren’t that hot. With an idle exhaust temp of 500C I can easily hold on to mine and I don’t have a cat cooling anything either.

I almost forgot to say, great looking pieces.

in any car I have seen, water on the exhaust tip fizzles off like crazy, so it’s well above 100c. I would guess 300c is a good starting point. Depending on what car/driving style, it can vary. If a compressed air car or fuel cell, I think you will be fine.

Must be those gas guzzling V8’s you all drive over there

There should be no temperature problem. There is no direct contact to the exhaust, so it will not become too hot.
If you go over the TG the epoxy will become elastic, but if it is only a cover that does not matter. The temperature where the resin starts to oxydize is the same temperatur that an high temp epoxy has!
So don’t worry about the resin, I would worry about the clear coat

Nice work, beautiful weave!

Why would you worry about the clear coat. ? It will all be fine unless its runing mega power for drag or track and is constantly abused it will be fine. The paint on the bumper is able to handle it so will the clear coat
