Question: Rolled edges on hoods

For those with experience what is best way to do this?

I don’t know to be honest, I’ve seen it done on hoods but since I’ve never wet laid a hood before it never occured to me to ask someone else.

I was thinking you would lay down your fabric first and have about 1-2" overhang the edge. Then take your squeegee edge and bring it right up to the edge of the hood, while you hold the squeegee there push the edge over onto itself and you have a rolled edge. I’m sure it would take some carefull handling. Tlay down the fiberglass matt or whatever is the next layer almost up to the edge of the hood, maybe a 1/4" shy of the edge. THis would hold the rolled edge in place. Maybe paint a litte extra resin on the edges. Of course you would have to snip the corners to lay them down.

I know I saw cfcrafting roll the edge on his S2K trunk. I’ve always wondered how to do this.

Did he roll the edge? I’m not sure.

If all you want is that side lip thing then just make sure you capture that in your mold.

Oh yes I assumed the would be there but I just thought there was a way to avoid trimming the edge post cure. I was thinking even if you had to cut the edge right after the roll feature you could always sand the cut smooth. Contouring an edge and then finishing just takes to long. On the hoods I have looked at it seems that there was no cutting on the edge but maybe these hoods had the edges cut, contoured and then coated.

Overkill IMO. But someone will come up with a way to do it and use it as a claim to as somehow that is cooler and then every body and their moms wants “rolled edge” as if it’s a mandatory feature.

The hood doesn’t fit and it fades in about 4 months… but what the hell… it has rolled edge. Lets buy it.

I get your point. A few companies have fostered “the rolled edge”. I just want to know how its done thats all. If I have a customer who wants it then it becomes a big deal to me really quick. I would not tell them its not important. I would rather have a hood that is lightweight and structurally sound than pretty edges myself.

I could not have said it better myself!!! I just have the edges in my mold and I am done with it

The edges on my trunk are not rolled although I can do it. #1 it’s a huge pain in the a$$ and there is really no point. Most of my molds the trunk in particular have 1/4 round edges so that the cut edge is not visible from the outside. When I go up to pa in two weeks I’ll take pics.

That makes sense the edges you have look great to me. I do have something to say about Evans’ comment.

“The hood doesn’t fit and it fades in about 4 months… but what the hell… it has rolled edge. Lets buy it.”

You could say the exact same thing about the general public being led to believe that their hood should be ultra glossy and it must be made of 2x2 Twill. I could rephrase your comment to say:

“The hood doesn’t fit and it fades in about 4 months… but what the hell… it is very shiny and it has a pretty pattern on it. Lets buy it.”

I think that’s even more funny. Show the average rice boy uni-tape prepreg and they say “that’s not carbon fiber, there’s no pattern”! Nevermind the fact that a hood made from uni-tape prepreg would have a resin content of 30-33% and beat the hell out of a fabric hood in weight, stiffness and strength. Ohh and then tell them they are going to pay 50% more for this hood. I’m surprised nobody is making hood overlays from lifting some of the hoods on the market. I thought carbon hiids were supposed to be light or something. LOL I guess infused parts are the next best thing to the scenario above.

If we are talking about the import market nothing surprises me anymore. I guess my main point is no matter how silly a customer request sounds you have to give it to them or they will buy from someone that gives them what they want. Sorry I guess I’m just venting a bit. I think the industry as a whole could help educate consumers and make money doing it. Most cf manufacturers seem to be in it for the quick cash rather than selling parts that will last or fit well. Anyway I’m way off topic here so I’ll cut it short.

No more autos for me

My hood is made out of uni directional carbon and painted, noone believes me it’s carbon because as you said there is no 2x2 pattern.

I was at a car show where there was a enzo and there were some ricers looking at it and they said and I quote “were is all the carbon fiber this is supposed to have, all I see is the sticker” If you have ever seen the enzo there is carbon everywhere and they thought is was all sticker because it was not 2k twill

 as well as the mucielago and mclaren f1. complete carbon.
