So, what is your preference folks? BPO/Cobalt, DMA, MEK, you know all the good stuff. To you guys prefer your drink promoted or unpromoted?
promoted!
saves my time.
Kevin, never “assume” (everyone knows what assume means…) there is only GUYS on here! LOL!
Myself, Barcardi and Coke!
GGROP, as you have said,
“with PER, it is a chemical reaction with the MEKP (cataylst) and the Cobalt in the PER that creates the heat to cure.”
It seems that advantage of mixing your own is that you have greater control over the cure rate and can customize it better to your working environment.
Here is a good overview site on chemical composition - http://www.azom.com/details.asp?ArticleID=986
Yes I did! We use it when we get really old (more than a year old) PER drums donated and try to make use of it in the classroom.
Be VERY carefull with the Cobalt storage and handling! Cobalt and MEKP or acetone together will explode. It is also highly harmfull to your health too.
I’ll check out that link later today…
Im very glad this subject came up. I just recieved a sample of un promoted VER infusion resin. My local guy didnt think that I might need it promoted I guess.
Anyways, Ive not had to mix cobalt before and need to know:
A) who has some (enough for five gallons)
B) how the hell do I mix it?
I want to try it but I dont really care for the extra work. I have to have special catalyzers for it too. Another negative for its application but I have a pint of the different catalyzer just no cobalt.
We get 6% cobalt from Plasticare in Denver area. Our ‘recipe’ called for 6% cobalt napthenate mixed into our VE resin at .5% by weight (so resin weight x .005). We bought a gallon which promoted more than two 55 gallon drums (you woun’t need much for 5 gal). If you find someone locally, you can pick it up yourself and save any hazardous shipping charges. It mixes readily, just use one of the paint mixers you can chuck in a drill: squirrel cage or laminar flow mixer. BE CAREFUL with it! Don’t get it near your MEKP (explosion hazard see above)
so this crap is liquid?
I need to find it localy. I dont want to buy it for 5 gallons.
Yes the cobalt comes in liquid form. The company I mentioned earlier (plasticareinc.com) carries smaller quantities of any of the chemicals needed for composite work, we can buy whatever small amounts we need from them. I don’t know where you are located but hopefully you’ve someone like that near you.
