PrePreg

How much does 2x2 twill 5oz or 6oz carbon prepreg sell for? Do they sell half rolls by any chance?

I’m not asking for anything i’m doing, just out of curiosity for future reference.

It just seems “baking” the parts would speed up cure time and production, along with not having to mess with the set up time of infusion or hand wetting the carbon fiber.

prepreg 3k twil is around $4-$5 a sqft, a 100 yrd roll will atleast cost 5 grand. uni is like $22 lbs a pound. this all depends on how much you buy. In the long run prepreg can be more cost effiecient, elimanting alot of labor cost, and lower skill requirement by a lot. highly recommended for manufacturing parts.

Well, if it works out to be $5 per sq ft for 2x2 twill that ain’t a bad price for prepreg.

no, it really isnt too bad, but you need to make a intial investment of an oven, and your tools must be able to go high temp. it is almost always labor cost that cost the most in any part, this is why so many company out source to china

Maybe some day I’ll be able to make the investment to do prepreg.

Before that I may ( may ) invest in an oven and high temp epoxy molds to help speed up the cure time, and to be able to make some exhaust guards.

We have sucessfully made exhaust guards using poly resin, and both production process times and costs can be reduced through using poly.

That may be worth trying here. Does poly crack or craze under high temperature though?

you want to make sure you check your tg of your poly to be sure it can handle the high temp. you can also use vinylester, which generally is much stronger and usually has a much higher tg, while keeping a low cost fast curing part
