Totally depends on what kind of product you have, carbon, glas, aramide, coating or not. Also depends on what clear you have from what brand. So my preperation advice is, test it.
I just wash it with soap and water, quick wipe with acetone, then rub it back with 1200 grit. Another quick wash and wipe with acetone, then spray it.
Hi Michiel, all my work is in carbon, Epoxy and 2k clearcoat. usually after demolding i sand the surface of the part with 1000 grit just to remove any surface imperfections which i usually get as a result of the spray tack, thereafter i shoot clear (2-3 coats) the polish.
I can usually get a mirror finish with 2k urethane paints with a surface texture as rough as 320 grit, even though 600 is usually the preferred level in auto body shops. Just throwing it out there as the paper is cheaper and that grit knocks back surface imperfections much more rapidly than a 1000 grit paper would. Always make sure you’re wet sanding though, even at the lower grits.
Why wet sanding? What does it change over dry sanding?
I have done a lot of paint work with my local auto paint shop.
Their/our standard prep for two pack paints is either 600 grade dry sanded with DA/random orbital or 800 grade when wet sanding.
