I am the first to admit my mould making skills are lower than a snakes belly… But after having had a mould cracking after only 4 pulls I have had to remake the mould. The original mould was made with some hybrid resin that the guy I use to make my moulds had developed and it seems is not suitable for pre-preg parts and was stress cracking all over the place. So after being left holding the damaged mould and a load of orders I decided to bite the bullet and remake the mould myself. I had looked at other wet lay resins and worked out the costs to remake it in carbon over glass. But it came down to a pre-preg tooling system from SHD Composites. The cost was comparable and in some cases actually cheaper. (depending on the quantity of material bought).
So my first pre-preg tooling went into remaking this mould. It was actually quite simple to use for most of it and the results have been great. The layup was a 1-4-1 layup with the material being inverted after the second backup layer. (Although due to it being dry carbon to dry carbon I did not invert the sides and found I still had a great surface on the mould face.)
Here are some photos…
