poured resin topcoat, How??

There is a company in the UK making/selling carbon motorbike items. They all say this and I quote:

“Genuine carbon fibre cloth comes alive under a crystal clear poured resin topcoat”

I like the really deep domed look that it gives, does anyone know how this is done and with what? Surely its not just a case of pouring some resin over the finished item!! Tried that and it doesnt seem quite that easy…

Any ideas?

There’s an overlay how-to post as well as a whole forum on www.racingcomposites.net.

A lot of the overlays i’ve seen tend to have that finish as they often have 4-7 coats of resin poured over the surface, then it is sanded and polished.

Can you give a link to their website?

I would genuinly doubt that the part picruted is actually carbon, it looks too much like all the rest of the gas cap covers I 've seen that are just a flebible decal thing with a thick domed look that you are talking about.

I agree someone is lying about that being real carbon fiber. That is a padded decal/sticker.

thats some serious porky if it isnt real carbon. They are charging 50 GBP for just the gas cap cover…

well it might be real carbon then… but it would have to be water jet cut or lazer cut.

As prevoiusly stated by others, you could get this effect by brushing on a few layers of resin over the top, whether on top of your infused part or over your wet lay open molded part…

It’s for a BMW, of COURSE it is expensive!

I wonder if they make some kind of a border around the trimmed piece of carbon and literally pour resin over the part, letting it “bubble” up over the border, pull the boarder away and wait for the resin to cure? Kind of hard to explain what I’m thinking but you know how you fill a glass to the very tip top with water and it gets that “dome” of water coming out the top of the glass?

LOL, it’s a theory anyway. ;o)

i have seen these type of parts before i thought it was urethane?? just a guess cause it is very flexiable

my theory would be that the part is first cut out as the thin piece of carbon that it is then after they just put a few layers of resin over it…

If they were to make a border around it then there woudln’t be the “domed” look to it around the edges after cutting, it would look like a 90 degree angle…

I see on a lot of cars that come through the shop where I keep my race car

similar stuff

Are they real of fake carbon in those cases?

that site quotes two different kinds “Real Carbon Fiber” which is obviously not true-true because it’s blue. But, they also have the flexible carbon fiber look-a-like decals.

I’m 99% sure the material is a decal. The interior of that car is a subaru wrx sti. I purchased a kit like that for my dad’s sti and its def. a rubbery poly with carbon like film on the back

I saw a gas cap “carbon fiber” set on ebay … it’s a clear rubber like decal… same thing… fake carbon fiber.

Like I said, the website lists two different options for that car, one is quoted as “real carbon fiber” the other is quoted as a thick carbon fiber decal.

There’s about $75-$100 difference in the prices of the two.

Impreza fake kit

you can tell the fake stuff, it’s obvious.

the resin they use is the same resin that badge/sticker/emblem manfacturers use.
its an extremely thick urethane so there is alot of surface tension and it doesn’t run off/over the edges of the flat part.

some ebay dash kit makers use the same or similar stuff on both real and fake carbon.

If you are trying to get a beveled edge on your overlay parts just use your normal resin, trim after a few layers or resin then sand down any bumps and brush marks then apply another layer or more to the edge of the part. You will have a beveled edge.
IMO an extremely beveled edge looks like poop, makes it look tacky and fake. A subtle bevel looks ALOT better

ITs still REAL carbon fiber, thats the black stuff, lol just has been woven with Kevlar (or dyed fiberglass). Therefore technically a Hybrid

they make black fiberglass too. So I didn’t want to jump to any conclusions.

sheesh. forget hoods and fenders. thats where the real profit is. little shit like that, being sold for crazy money. and the consumers buy them up like crazy. if i sell 5 pairs of “headlamp eyelids” i get 10 times more profit rather than selling a bonnet.
