Post Cure Epoxy

I’m looking for a good light color or clear laminating epoxy that after oven cure of a few hours will have a tg of 250F. Also I am hoping for an inexpensive brand that can be purchased by quarts or gallon.

I also need a high temp tooling epoxy and surface coat.

Any advice?

Also I prefer doing a vacuum bag wet lay up as opposed to vacuum infusion.

For most of our tooling, I use epoxies from PTM&W. Their high temp resins are very good.

I want to say Huntsman has a hightemp tooling resin system (and gelcoat). It was black. I remember that

The Huntsman 8105 epoxy is a nice high temp epoxy. can go to 300F.

But IMO it’s asking for too much to want something that’s also clear and inexpensive. Those characteristics don’t generally go with high temp resins. The decision needs to be made if these are poseur “cool” parts, or high quality strong composites.

i used a hardener on my latest bonnet that after it’s been post cured for 10hours at 60C , it has heat resistance 140C (284f)

but its from the german company i buy stuff from (r-g.de) so if you re in america, i dont think it will interest you…

the hardener is only slightly yellow, and the resin water-clear, its perfect for laminating carbon…

A slight blue or amber is ok. Like the reninfusion it is slightly blue then turns amber after curing (weird), it still leaves the blackness of the c/f showing. Some polyesters turn the carbon fiber a brownish color. This is what I’m trying to avoid.

Aga that sounds like an awesome resin if the final tg is higher than the oven post cure temp.

I was looking at the specs on the Huntsman 8105 and they look good, but you say the resin is black in color?

Yup. Both the tooling coat and the laminating resin.

I’m using HTR212/ 386-99 from Resin Services. The rep said it’s good to 325F. It’s very clear.

the 8105 is amber not black. I really doubt you will be able to see a color variance by using a amber epoxy vs. clear. you shouldn’t have enough resin on the surface to matter.

that is correct, many people use vinylester on carbon, and that`s dark brown… it makes a difference, but only to the trained eye.

oh…the number looked familiar though. They do have a black colored high-temp tooling resin series.
I think it was huntsman…hmm.

re: 8105 resin. Yes slight amber is ok. I just hope with heat/time it won’t discolor/change to a darker color?

Do you know the postcure temps & times for this epoxy?

…and I can snatch the pebble from your hand

I beleive that you are thinking of their 8605 resin. But I could be wrong:rolleyes:
