Polyester tooling resin

I was wondering what the chemical difference is between ortho resin and iso tooling resin?

Also what fillers do i add to iso tooling resin to make my own tooling gel coat? Times are hard and cash is in short supply around here. Do I just add a little cab o sil and orange dye?

Thanks guys. I’ll buy the right stuff in the future, but for now i would like to get two small PER molds made.

It would be better for you to read the Forbe aire book on the differences of GP and ISO resins.

Just buy tooling gel coat resin as it like cooking, do you want to eat a Greasie spoon or Black Angus steak house! Sometimes, they may have some stock getting a little old and they will sell it at a discount. I had a source for PER gel coats at $5 to $10 per gallon…

Unless you are making a ton of parts from a mold, std. gel coat will work fine. Just get it on thick and also maybe back that surface coat up with another color gel coat before adding reinforcements. That’s so if you have to sand on it and it chages colors you know you are getting close to the reinforcements!

The Forbes Aird book is really very good indeed, and for someone new to composite work really is worth getting hold of, and reading very carefully.

I agree about that book, i have it here. He mentions GP and tooling gel coat in chapter 11. And the way it is worded is very confusing. I couldn’t figure out in one paragraph if he was talking about the properties of GP or Tooling gel coat.

I’ll stick to gel coats that are already packaged as such. I may use some regular gel coat tinted orange for a couple molds i need to make.

In the meantime i’ll go back and read chapter 4 of that book, where it talks more about gel coats.
