polyester gel coat in mould

I have a few moulds I am about to start vac bagging carbon in. I kind of want to use a clear gel coat in the mould to eliminate any pits. My question is can I use Epoxy resins with the carbon on top of this polyester gelcoat? I have heard yes/no from various people. I have heard vinylester resin works but I am not sure how the strength would compare to the epoxy. I would prefer to use epoxy if possible.

thanks

I have read in other posts the ResinServices makes a HTR212-386 that can be used. I cannot find this exact product on their site. Has anyone used this before? Is it a brush on or gelcoat gun spray on?

You just have to make a test part using polyester gel coat and then laying up with epoxy after the gel coat has cured. Otherwise there will be a mess if the polyester gel coat is not fully cured before epoxy lay up.

Resin Services Inc says HTR212-386 can be used as a surface coat for making parts.

is HTR212-386 simply an epoxy resin? is it a gelcoat? how is it applied?

p.s. I just did a test on a small flat panel well see how it turns out, but a test ‘part’ is out of the question it would be $500+ down the drain if it didn’t turn out

yeah that is all you need is a test piece. After it is completed flex it, place it in the sun for a month, flex it some more… see what happens if anything.

HTR212-386 is a surface coat and laminating resin. If you want a clear brush on epoxy surface coat Resin Services sells a different hardener that is specifically made to be surface coat. But the rep said 386 will work.
