Polish recommendations?

I haven’t seen any discussion on what people are using for polishing their plugs, molds and final parts.

I just finished polishing a plug for a kayak paddle blade and I thought I could get a “liquid look” on the surface of the duratec surfacing primer, but it still has a slight haze. I wet sanded down to 2000 grit, then I used some TR-311 buffing followed by 3M Perfect-It II Fine cut, and finally some 3M Finesse-It II. The surface is smooth & flawless, but the shine is lacking. All these were applied using a DA polisher with wool pad, followed by Lake foam pads (each compound has it’s own pad - no cross contamination of compounds)

What are some other suggestions for a fool proof process expecially for bringing mold surfaces up to and maintaining a class A shine?

Thanks - Bob

I just use 3M polishing compound w/ wool pad and mirror glazing compound with a foam pad. I normally don’t glaze the plug since it doesn’t really transfer onto the mold surface. I think you’re too criticial with the plug surface as this point. 2000 grit is probably over kill but more is better than less. As long as your plug is smooth, scratch free and is some what shiny then that’s all you can ask for. Your mold will come out a little bit dull but a quick polish will give you the shine you’re looking for.

Thanks Evan,

It’s the 1st time using & polishing Duratech surfacing primer so I wasn’t sure what to expect. All my other projects have had an epoxy surface coats to polish. The Duratech is amazing considering how easily it can be applied, sanded, & polished. I can see why it’s so popular now that I’ve used it.

sorry for going off topic but what is the difference between a kayak fishing rod and a normal rod? Just curious
