Plug Paint and Primer

Hi guys

I need to paint my very large plugs. They are made out of fiberglass skin filled with a poliurethane filler (Alexit Blade repair).
Now i need to prime and paint them with good quality in black brilliant (to notice imperfections)
Automotive 2k products are really expensive for so many square meters. Any body has a recommendation of a primer (good sandability) and paint i can purchase in europe that has an interesting price.
My moulds will be out of fiberglass and an acrylic paste.

Hi berridos, a brand whit I have good results here in andalucia is Carpo, a 2k poliuretane primer that is not to expensive, works realy good with poliester and epoxi. Around here they are selling it in 5 kg. There are another one, perfection primer, that you can have it in 1 kg. I don’t know if that helps!

hey berridos, I just took a look at your blog, realy nice proyect!. About that devise you done to look for bumps, the best way (at least for me) to go is a long piece of wood whit sand paper. Send me a private and maybe I can help you a little bit.

Hi Pablo

I have been working with a 2m iron sanding block that weight about 30kg to avoid flex. Then passed to 1m alu block and now i am in the 220 and 400 grid sanding phase with smaller blocks. Not perfect but hopefully laminar. Maybe a 2mm curve over 6m. Should be alright.
Thanks for your tip. After your primer should i use poliuretano alifatico as a paint?

Paint used in the Netherlands is Double Coat (2C PU paint). Would need to ground-ship to ES. Can be done. Sprayable and rollable.

How about a surfacing primer like Duratec? Could save you a lot in the end (in time definitely, maybe in money as well)?

I’m interested to know what you end up going with…

All the info I’ve found suggests that there is no cheap and easy way to finish a plug. Either you spend the money and make life easier for yourself, or you do it cheap and spend a lot of time on getting a good surface finish.

The Duratec system ranges are very good. I have used this system on many plugs and you get a very good finish. The Primer is a high build and easy to sand and wehn combined with the top coat you can achieve an A class finish. Not too expensive either…

At the end I bought an acrylic automotive primer produced by a local company. One third the price of a standard branded automotive primer. On top a poliurethane paint. Also much cheaper than automotive paint. One of my goals is to build cheap and stay attached to a reasonable budget. i am on holidays. Next week I will see if I took the right decision.

With many years of trial and ERROR experience behind me, I spare little expence on the finishing of my plugs and molds. Granted I may take less time on a single part mold than a production one, but the materials involved never change. Find something that works and keep with it. I have had more issues with incompatibility over the years than anything else. Your money ultimately comes from your parts, but it all starts with that first plug and mold. In composites, ERRORS are expensive. Especially with exotic materials and resins.
