Heres a a few pics of some of the latest parts I have made. This is a replica of a livesports Toyota starlet spoiler
.Inside
lower skirt trim for a makinen evo
toyota starlet bonnet
bonnet scoops in twill and harness satin
subaru impreza bootlid
inner side
Good work.
Post some pics when the parts are painted and finished on the cars!
wow,great work
very nice work!
Are those “rolled edges”? all of this was by infusion?
All parts have rolled edges where needed and were made with infusion.I use a low viscosity vinyl ester resin and clear coat all the parts with standard 2k clear. The spoiler was a bitch to bond togethet as the carbon laminate was so thin it was like trying to bond card edge to edge. This was my first attempt at a 2 piece part so next time I will build up more layers around where it will be bonded to give more thickness to work with.
Nice work and thank you for sharing the pict’s and tips!
nice parts…thanks for posting the pics
what did you use to joint the spoiler?
for the actual joint I used a fast setting epoxy glue and about 20 clamps!.I also used some sika 255fc inside the joint to be sure.It was my first attempt at a bonded part and I will do some things a different way next time.
Your parts look great:cool:
how do you reach the inside? I am doing almost the same thing, but what I am thinking was to use some tape inside either top or bottom part around the seam line, so I can apply some thick resin so it wont run down, then attach top and bottom together. Hope you know what i am talking about.
why don’t you attach some small carbon or fiberglass plates in points around the inside perimeter of one piece of the roof spoiler, as a guide so the two pieces “fit” together…
That is quite close to the way i made it.I used the sika to hold the part together and then bonded the join with the thick epoxy
I had thought about this too Aga.It would stop the thin carbon laminates from slipping inside each other while it was setting and would make the sides easier to lign up.Thanks for the tip
Nice work
I found that leaving one half of the part still in the mould worked quite well, that way I had something sturdy to work against - I just used heavy weights on top while the adhesive set, although maybe you could use a vac bag maybe?
personally i’m afraid of clamps, they might leave an imprint , even on really stiff parts… i just tape the part around while the glue is curing (in my case, bonnet)
or something like this. If molded right, can possibly create a strong lap joint, and not be visible after some sanding.
what would you do differently molding the 2 pieces? Also try using tape as stated above. I used to use clamps when attaching my hood skins with the frames and found that tape works SOOOO much better
What type of tape do you use? when I use tape it leaves residues everywhere! because of the resin melt it.
