perforated release film vs peel ply

Hi guys, i’m still a bit confused when i comes to the used of these. what are the advantages of using one over the other and which applications suits one over the other.

thanks.

depends on your process… but basically peel ply is used to leave a textured finish suitable for secondary bonding. Release film controls the resin bleed

If you are doing a wet lamination or prepreg you will need to use a perforated, or non perforated release film to control the resin bleed. Without it you will more than likely pull too much resin from the laminate. You can also use the peel ply with the release film to have a textured finish on the laminate either for bonding purpose or cosmetics

For infusion you can either use peel ply or release film or both. The release film is only used to remove the flow media easy. However a good release coated nylon peel ply works well for this too. If you use a release film for infusion you need to have large perforations such as a P31

thanks Hojo, in terms pin holes and bubble does peel ply and release film play any role i.e help to reduce or eliminate them.

of course it plays a factor depending on your process. With wet lamination and prepreg if you bleed too much resin you will have pits between the fiber. If the holes are too small you can also trap air.

If youre looking to get a good pinhole, void free laminate then you should consider Infusion.
