peel ply for vacuum, do I really need it?

I just bought some stretchlon 800 and going to learn infusion and bagging, do I really need peelply or release bag? because from what I’ve seen, bag don’t stick to the part.

The bag doesn’t but your flow media will.

I forgot about the resin flow, do I need resin flow? if it’s just a small part.

Depends on a few factors. Resin viscosity and the type/thickness of the reinforcement will affect flow. How small of a part?

in my experience, it helps with the finish of the bag side of the part. If you use a fabric peel ply, it will leave a nice rough, but smooth finish. otherwise, you will have wrinkles, sharp edges, resin bridging, and just general noticable unevenness.

Yeah I spaced out last week and infused two parts witout peel ply and Im now digging out the flow media…grrrrrr!

Don’t skimp. Get the peel ply and flow media, and do it right.

Yea I rather do it right, I am going to order some peel ply and resin flow, thanks guys.

I do an infusion one time without peel ply only resinflow and polyester resin and when was cure I #%$@#%$@ to take it out. The resin flow it was stuck on the part and no any way to take it out, so I throught it and I fix another one.

do you guys use release film or peel ply? and why?

Peel ply is what you need for infusion. It’s pretty much a really fine mesh.
Release film is for regular vacuum bagging. It’s basically a smooth sheet of plastic, with holes poked in it kind of far apart.

Here’s a related question: If you put continuous strand mat in your vacuum infusion layup, can you get by without flow media?

You can use plastic netting of the type used by gardenders, rather than flow media. Its pretty much exactly the same thing, but only about 1/10 of the cost!

Something like this… http://www.focusdiy.co.uk/invt/185541

Some reinforcements help a lot with resin flow, but I wouldn’t count on it unless you have a lot of experience.
Make some test panels using different materials and see what happens. There are core materials that act as flow media so you wouldn’t need disposable mesh. We use mostly undirectional fiberglass and carbon, which makes infusion go a lot quicker. But to me, it’s worth the little extra cost to use a flow media to ensure full wet out.

I saw couple garden netting mesh and poly tubes from homedepot for very good price, are those good for infusion? And also what Respirator do you guys use? there are couple different Respirators out there, will any organic Respirator good for working with resin?
