I’ve got a customer that wants to have his rear deck lid overlayed. I know somebody on here has done it and I could use some advice on the best way to do it. Also, what’s the best resin to use for a project like this?
I take it is a Carbon Fiber overlay?
Do any body repairs first.
Paint it black.
Spray InfuZene (for PER) or 3m (epoxy) spray adhesive and carfully lay the CF cloth down without winkles. Smooth out now.
Clear coat by pouring the resin over it and let it build up.
Sand between coats to even out.
Spray PUR auto clear coats for the final coatings.
Probally more steps in between, but a quickee overveiw…
I’ve done lots of overlays on plastic but this is the stock steel deck lid. My main concern is selecting a resin that will adhere well to the steel and whether I can get it to adhere to the painted surface or if I need to strip the paint first.
What I tell my students is, wneh in doubt, try it on a small scale (test panels).
Epoxy hold onto everything the best, but is expensive and you can’t spray it.
