Overlaying a product with CF (questions)

Gents,

Here’s what I’ve got…I have a urethane lip that was on the front end of my car (maxima) and due to the brutal winter we had this year, the freaking urethane cracked during the aftermath of a snow storm (hit a patch of ice)

I would like to repair the lip and figure that I could take the opportunity to overlay it with CF. What do I need to do to get a painted lip ready for a CF overlay?

I’ve been lurking here for sometime and will now actually go and read up on the stuff… Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

oekundar

well you are working with the worst material to overlay over. Urethane does not adhear to resin in the least. You would need to sand it down and do a layer or 2 of fiberglass over the lip. Then you would overlay onto of the fiberglass. So if it does come apart you would still have the fiberglass to hold it’s shape

Interesting…well that sucks…now the lip is currently painted would it behove me to leave the paint on and try adhering to that?

no because resin make a chemical reaction with the clear coat on them and you could bubble the clear coat under it and again make it lift

OK…I get you…I will be stripping the lip down and sanding it a bit…then laying a layer of glass prior to the layer of CF…hopefully that works out as planned

Ya. ditto on the paint problem. I have had several instances when making a mold from a piece with an auto finish on it bubble the surface. I was always careful to make sure the exotherm did not get too hot by building several layers at the same time. Whenever possible, it is probably safest to just have a clean, primer surface that has your desired finish quality.
