Overlay Steering Wheel

Need help with how to cut the carbon fiber and wrap a steering wheel. It needs to look seemless or have a very fine seem on the backside diameter.

Suggestions and Tips please

also i heard there is a tape you can lay down on cf, make your cut, then peel the tape off? Ever hear of this product?

Do you think it would be best to wrap the wheel in precision sheetwax, make a mold off of the wheel rim… a clam shell mold then bond the two halves to the steering wheel?

Did one about a year ago. The customer sent me his carbon wheel with carbon in three areas that was starting to peel away. The wheel had hard plastic under the carbon areas so I removed the carbon and cut a small slot into the plastic on the back side. After wrapping the new carbon around the dia. I tucked the fabric into the small slot which gave a really nice look after the resin was applied.

Sorry to hi-jack but what is sheet wax?

thin wax used by tooling guys to build offsets into parts. say a part is going to be wrapper in leather, the tool is cut to the final dimension, and the wax is placed to provide the offset so that when the part is wrapped it comes back to the nominal thickness. wax is available in a number of thicknesses and with and without adhesive backing

The slot idea… i like it

our wheel is made of wood, steel, and carbon fiber. We enlarged the diameter of the 3 and 9’oclock positions to be as beefy as the rest of the wheel… as per customer request. Sanded the resin and cf smooth, ground in new finger grooves to the backside to match the rest of the wheel.

When you overlaid your wheel, did you have issue with the carbon fiber unraveling during the wrap job?

Another option for wax sheet…http://www.mcmaster.com/#wax-sheets/=aalpa1

I actually used 2x2 twill but ran the fibers at a 45 to the surface so it looked like biaxial sleeving with the lines in the weave following the curve of the wheel. I also ran a small piece of tape, about a 1/16 wide along the edges that got tucked into the slot to keep them from unraveling.

Bumping this up to see if Fastrr ever got this done and what other people are doing.
