Opin.s on White and Black Surface/Gel coat

Ive always used a White Epoxy based surface coat for the first layer of my molds. Ive seen a lot of people use black…

what are your opin.'s on it.

Very difficult to see any defects in white gel-coat, thats the reason darker colours are generally used by most people.

exactly why I use black…I want to see any potential problems I have

Flaws and imperfections are most easily noticed on black. On orange, and especially white, it’s hard to tell which areas aren’t highly polished or waxed.

For color gel coated fiberglass parts, Black tooling mold gel coat to better see the part gel coat going down and thickness while spraying.

But if I was going to use the mold for CF, I think I would use white to better to see the CF weave going in first after the clear coat.

Just my .02 worth…

I use white. I don’t have much of a problem finding imperfections. But I hate the bubbles I run into If I try wetsanding and buffing in the mold. Even with hitting what I just painted on the plug with a heat gun and using a pore sealer in the mold before the semi-perm release I have bubbles that form pits with this epoxy surface coat system. It’s Freemans epoxy surface coat. What are other systems people are using?
