So I have had a strong interest in making my own car parts for a very long time. I have taken a course in Strentghs of Composites in my Mechanical Engineering course work. I am here to learn more on how to get started and to get to making parts!

Car stuff is always good fun!

Welcome

what types of cars are you into? What kinds of parts do you want to make?

Thanks!
I like all sorts of cars. I just sold my 2010 370z and am looking for a 98-02 BMW M Roadster now. I am probably going to focus on interior parts. I have some spare 93-95 Mazda RX-7 parts laying around I am going to practice on. I am kind of a Built not bought kind of person when it comes to cars. I plan on putting an LS3 chevy V8 in the bmw and want to make all the parts myself.

The part I am going to start on is a rear diffuser for the 3rd gen RX-7. I have one to make a mold from and its a relatively simple shape and can be made with just one mold.

That’s cool, the diffuser sounds like it’d be a pretty good project. It’s all about the mold. I"m a mazda guy myself, so I’m all for mazda parts!

well good luck and i’m sure you’ll get some good advice round here.

i ordred some carbon fiber and blue carbon kevlar material from Composite Envisions and got a gallon of resin and half gallon of 2:1 hardener. I got a box of brushes and some mixing cups off amazon and got started on skinning some parts. It was like 62 degrees in my place so the time for getting to “tack” was pretty long (9hrs). I had the carbon fiber taped around the edges when I was laying it on the parts and that caused some issues. It didnt lay down as nicely as I would have liked but I am still learning. I went a head and continued with the process and will likely replace these parts with some new ones from the scrap yard and give it another go. Pretty happy with how it works though. With some practice I think I will be able to turn out some nice parts.
