Newbie here

Hey everyone. I’m new to the composites world. I posted a couple times on Racingcomposites.net but it’s fairly slow there and found this link on someone’s name there, so I figured I’d join this(seems busy here!) . Just thought I’d say what’s up!

Welcome to the forums! There’s tons of info here so feel free to browse around and find what you need!

hey mikey!
im on there as well, rather slow sometimes isnt it!!

what experience do you have with composites???

cheers!
keni ^-^

thanks canyon!

Hey Keni, I just started working with it recently(I’m a DIY guy like I’m sure many are on here). Made 2 molds and 5 cf lay-ups(a light switch cover), so i’m learning. I had a problem, but I think I found what I was doing wrong(I can post it and picks here too) I think it was airbubbles in my epoxy, I heated it up with a heat gun and got the bubbles out on my last one and it came out much better. It is a bit slow, so I’m glad I found this site, seems pretty active!

Hey mikey!
Yeah I’ve found that as well, heat gun is great to draw out tiny air bubbles with carbon, I was actually told ( and I lol’d but iv found it helps) that stirring too vigorously can put air bubbles into your mix! I’m assuming that it’s for hand lay though…
My first attempt at a mould was a total fail but Im self taught as well, before I was working in the industry… I didnt mix the tooling 100% and then to try compensate I hit it hard with the heat gun (coz tooling isnt hot enough to start with lol) which besides screwing the tooling screwed the plug as they were a factory plastic part… I completed the mould but yeah… No good haha. So if your first mould was good, ur doing better than me lol
I also love how these forums are active too! It’s brilliant.
If you don’t mind me asking about your name, do u have peircings? I have a few myself!!

Hey Thistler, how’s it down in Oz these days? I’m on a Pontiac board, quite a few of your contrymen have classic Pontiacs and are very active on the board! My first molds came out decent, but I broke them the last layup I did lol. I’m not sure what I did…I need some more tooling myself…This does seem to be a pretty good board. I had piercings. They’re all out now. I had my tongue, and a total of 8 in the place that would make most men cry lol. I have 7 tattoos too. You wouldn’t know it by looking at me though, but that’s part of the fun lol

Same here about the molds. First one was a disaster, never got a good part off of it but I learned a ton.

Off topic why’d you get rid of your piercing? Body art is pretty cool but for starting engineers it’s a big minus. I had to cut my long hair to look “presentable” for job interviews. I can’t imagine what some of the senior engineers would think if I showed up with tattoos and piercings. Hasn’t stopped some of my classmates though.

Oops double post this one didn’t show up so I re-posted lol

That’s the thing, we don’t have a lot of money but my wife said as long as I’m learning and get better to do it as I can(molds and layups).

I had to get rid of them because they were…um…bothering my wife(as I said they were where most guys would cry lol). I was taking them out and putting them back but that started to hurt after a while, so I just left them out. My ink is on my arms and legs, so they’re easy to hide. I think it’s stupid to have to change who you are for a job(hair, hide piercings etc). As long as the person can do the job, and do it well, who cares?

yeah the aussies love their classic and restoration of cars!
i have 5 peircings, ears, navel and nipple [the nipple is a double peircing in the one  ] and am booking in to get a dermal anchor on the bottom of my navel within the next 2 months… but no art yet - as much as i do want i just cant commit to a design so for now im just hanging out in the peircing corner… and i agree, as long as it doesnt affect your work, what does it matter?
although having said that i have seen a n00b rip out an eyebrow peircing taking his grinding mask off too quickly… ouch :frowning:

Welcome and have a nice posts

Yeah they do. And you guys have quite a few impressive cars there, some Holdens, the Falcon etc. My ink all has meaning to it, well thought out. I have a claddagh that I later added a Celtyic band to. Do you know the old Ford V8 symbol? I ripped that off and instead of the V it’s a Pontiac symbol(for the Pontiac V8), and then I have the ADIDAS stripes on each foot, one in the color of the Irish flag(50% Irish) one for the Canadian flag(50% Canadian) then the tri-foil on my calves in red white & blue(for 100% American!). Nice! I thought about my nipples but they’re snsitive(although I guess my other parts should have been lol). The piercings are a bit easier to get rid of than the ink if you change your mind though. Owwwwwww…man my eyes teared up thinking about that lol

Thanks George! Hope all is well in Greece!

haha yeah, i have those peircings yet the idea of getting say the top of my ear or nose justr sounds so horribly painful… lol!
your ink sounds cool, you sound colourful

yeah there’s a few piercings that i thought would be bad…i wanted my septum but just seems like it would hurt like a mofo. i like the idea of being able to hide it easily though(turn it up). thanks, i’m pretty happy with it(i like them to have meaning, not just get ink to get it. colorful is a good way to describe me. some would say crazy, but i guess they could be the same! lol.

nice blog by the way! hopefully i get my skills up like that!

Hello. Whether there are here people speaking Russian?

Здравствуйте. Есть ли здесь люди говорящие по-русски?

Welcome, where in MA are you from?

Hello. I’m from Russia city of Kaliningrad. Do you speak Russian.?

TomNM,
This is an english speaking forum. Out of curiosity what’s your interest in composites?

text will not always be correct, as I write through the translator. interested in composites. mastered the vacuum. We in Russia is very little information. and if there is, monotonous. I want to find someone who can answer my questions.
