New (to me) material, similar to plain weave - Black Diolen

I saw some interesting material on a suppliers website so I ordered a couple of square meters to give it a try. Its turned up and I’m really impressed, it looks very similar to plain weave carbon but a little shinier, best thing is that it cost £5 ($10) per square meter.

I’m planning on using it to back up infused parts, I’m only producing parts for myself and only cosmetic stuff so to cut down costs I don’t want to use carbon for subsequent layers but I’d still like the part to look presentable on the back side.

Anyway here is the link to the product and a couple of close up photos

Yup…black glass. I don’t know how well it works as carbon knockoff. I wonder about the dye coming off, or maybe fading with age? Just don’t sell it off as carbon fiber!!!

i have a friend that bought a dash kit for his car to find out 2 years later it was dyed glass not carbon. He has had it in his car for 2 years and it has not faded yet. He was pretty pissed when he found out though

i have used black glass, but it was very stiff. the one i see in this picture looks very soft, like carbon.

I have some dyed black glass from Thayercraft. It is 8.21oz, 8 harness. 8 harness works well if you don’t have tight corners to go around or in. The dye is transfered off into the resin a little bit but not enough to notice on the finished product.

I just bought it because it too was cheap… like $5 a yard i paid and I only use it to back up the laminate. But that plain weave looks better.

yeah it kinda pisses me off when i see companies advertising colored composites as carbon fiber. “here we have a red carbon fiber dash insert” blah blah blah. you know because you too have probably seen that false advertising. Like “silver” carbon fiber lol.

I normally email the vendor and start bitching.
Never get replies back though…maybe once. His excuse was “it says it on the package, not my fault!”

smegheads!

importfan.com got majorly sued I heard, that is why they are not in business. Someone ordered a lot of stuff in silver thinking it was silver carbon when it wasn’t
