New to composites - have some questions

Please forgive me but I’m new to composites. At present, I’ve only done a couple of test pieces just to start getting a little experience and familiarise myself with the process and the results that I can expect from various practices and materials. So far my test pieces consisted of flat sheets of carbon and glass fibre of varying thickness with a PE gel coat & resin, produced using plastic coated chipboard as a mould. The mould was initially prepared with 3 to 4 coats of wax followed by 2 coats between each release.

Following these test pieces I’d just like to ask what other peoples views are on the following:

  1. I spent an age picking brush hairs out of the gel coat.

a. Is this normal when brushing gel coat?
b. Is there a cost effective alternative?
2) I found that the catalyst (MEKP) had lifted the graduations off of the syringe that I used to measure it out and that the little rubber piston inside was braking up and leaving traces in the catalyst the next time I used it.
a. Is it normal to use a new syringe on a regular basis or is there a more durable/reusable alternative for metering small quantities of catalyst?
3) I was disappointed to find that the finish of the carbon test pieces were marred by streaks left in the gel coat which I presume came from the mould release wax.
a. Have I over done it with the wax or is it normal to have to put a lot of effort into polishing the gel coat to a deep glossy finish?
b. Should I be cleaning the wax from the mould between releases and if so what with?

Any help with the above issues would be greatly appreciated.

Rob

Right hers my 2pence

1
A) i have never had to pic hairs out of my brushes, i buy mine from a local grp supllies
B) try difrent brushes or spray

2
A) again my syringes are west system and never had no trouble. Buy from proper grp supplies

A)im lost you should be cleaning all your wax off the mould and to get a good finishes i clear coat my parts but again the finish is down to the surface of your mould
B) THERE SHOULD BE NO WAX RESIDUE ON A MOULD IT SHOULD BE TOTALLY CLEAN AND TACK WIPED

Btw sack your chip board off for glass

  1. Brainstorm is right. Get better brushes. The ones that are in the DIY market (100 brushes for 1 euro) do not work.

  2. Do not use syringes. the MEKP makes them difficult to move. There comes a time where you will need force to empty the syringe, splashing the MEKP into the resin, splashing back into your eye. Having MEKP in your eye is a VERY BAD idea, rinse with loads of water, then consult a doctor. I hope he can save your eye…
Get yourself a MEKP dispencer. We give them away for free when someone orders 5 kg or more of resin…

  3. Experiment with different wax, and do a lot of effort polishing up the wax.

The Harbor Freight brushes have worked well for me. Also like mentioned above syringes + MEKP are a bad idea. If you’re doing that I hope you’re at least wearing splashproof chemical goggles, NOT the z87 impact goggles.

I must say i do use syringes with my west epoxy only mixing for small amouts, also id advise scales most resins i use have a mixing ratio by weight not volume

Syringes for epoxy are not bad. Just keep in mind the mixing ratio. If you cut the complete tip off a syringe, you have a great adjustable measuring cilinder, which you can push empty into a small mixing cup.

I alwats weigh out my ratio
