New Parts

Here is a pair of side covers for a motorcycle I am working on. Keep in mind they are not finished.

Remember i was asking about epoxy gel coating the mold before infusing… well these parts are the reason why. But in hindsight and hearing your guys’ thoughts on the matter, it is just a flow medium/bag problem.

So what your looking at is the parts trimmed to exact shape, then sanded smooth with 220 grit paper, then 320 wet. After that I brushed on some epoxy to surface coat the parts. That is the stage these are at now. More sanding and then clearcoating is yet to come. These are not perfect parts, just wanted to contribute something to the forum… spark a conversation or (maybe a flamethrower lol)questions some may have.

I suffered from similar surface problems, try slowing down the flow of resin, I was wetting out too fast and trapping bubbles against the mold and the reinforcements, giving a crappy surface. I still use the same red mesh and red stretchlon bagging that I did while I had my problems, but now I’m getting A+ surfaces.

Thanks, I will try that. I’m going to use up the rest of this green flow medium until i have the funds to buy a roll of red.

I can’t imagine what it would be like to pull perfect parts from the mold… sure would be nice.

Nice job fast, be sure to show us some pics when they are finshed.

Look like R1 fuel tank side covers, any ideas yet on how you are going to make and affix the locating tabs for the rear side of them?

I have been working on them on and off for about a week now. 30 minutes here 30 minutes there. I should be clearcoating them tomorrow or Monday maybe. I need to add tabs to the backside made from carbon fiber plate and epoxy glue to hold them in place, paint the backside flat black also. Still have a few hours worth of work to do on them.
