I just thought it came out pretty cool. Original stamped steel piece on the left. Think i’ll be making more silver parts, as it looks great on complex shapes.
Silver texalium and quadraxial NCF infused with vinyl ester.
Looks great. What’s quadraxial NCF? Did you make a mould or did you use the inside of the one on the left as a mould?
I made a mold of the original with large flanges for infusion. Backside of the metal part isn’t very good anyways, and of course it would have come out slightly undersize.
NCF= Non Crimp Fabric. It’s essentially several layers of unidirectional, stiched together instead of woven. The fibers stay totally straight, and therefore results in less shrinkage and a stiffer laminate. We use bi, tri, and quad axial fiberglass depending on the fiber orientation needed for a part.
It’s also a big help for laying down plies, as one layer of NCF is equal to several layers of woven fabric, and therefore ply layup is much faster. Less tack spray is needed as a result. It also greatly improves resin flow as the resin travels between the fibers, whereas with woven fabrics the warp/weft intersections get even tighter under vacuum and impede flow. Less flow media is used.
Nice work! Silver looks really good. Looks OEM.
Got a name and number of a distributor that sells the non crimp fabric?
I order rolls from RevChem. Most of the glass NCF we use is made by Zoltek, and the carbon NCF from Hexcel. Some of them are available in up to 10’ widths by special order, but we generally go with 6’ wide rolls.
You can get smaller amounts of it from fiberglasssupply.com. Limited selection though.
Just thought I’d update this thread.
Here’s the piece in plain weave carbon which we rarely use:
The kevlar tracers can barely be seen.
Also made some in the 12k checkerboard pattern carbon weave, but sent them out before taking pics.
Nice work Is this on a car?
Yes, on a car that we made a lot of carbon parts for. Hood, front and rear bumper structures, doors, trunk lid, interior reinforcement panels, front splitter/diffuser, flat underfloor, rear diffuser.
I’ll post some pics later of this same piece in 4x4 twill.
