Natural fibers

Any one have worked with natural fibres like flax fibre, abaca? Any recommendations or comments about them?
Anyone knows some suppliers?

lineo for instance. Worked with flax. Not much different than other fibres in production.

Selcom in Italy produces flax multiaxials. These are relatively easy to work with, and infuse well.

I have worked with Lineo wovens, but infusion was a nightmare. Way too dense fabric to even get resin through. Just for fun we folded a basket out of it, and poured resin in. It would not come through…

The nonwovens were easy to infuse, but their relative inconsistency caused too much variation in thickness.

One of the products I have been involved in was the “Biovalk” which is a 6.5 meter sailboat, made from green materials. Given the short timespan in which things should happen (2 weeks from ordering materials to finished product) it is not perfect, but it is a good start.

Yeah that the problem with flax, when companies sell in textile used fabrics. They dont work in infusions, etc.

I made infusions of different flax fabrics. It very depends how much twisted is the yarns in the fabric. Once infused high twisted separate yarns, and it was completely dry, no resin. I am looking for fabrics witch are non-crimp twistless fabrics.

herman have you worked with that Selcom multiaxial fabric?

Yes, works perfectly. I have had 400 grams biax and 600 grams biax. Contact them if you like. I still have some 600 grams if you need.

Ahh, no thanks, we have plenty of stuff to test. Still need to upgrade some parts. Flax doesn’t hold so big stresses.
