My project

Well it’s not my first post, but this is a little project that I’ve been working on.

Continued below.

And when it’s finished, it will do the job of one of these.

Sorry about the poor picture quality, the only digital camera I own is on my mobile phone (I now have no money because i spent it all on milling machines and carbon fiber!!)

Umm. Is it a gear shift mechanism? Looks complicated.
Looks like you’re doing good work there mate.

Are you reproducing the standard item or some special racing part?
Or is it your design?

What did you use for that carbon? A press of some type?

It’s a racing gearshift for my Mk2 golf gti.
It’s my own variation on the design because i wanted to use as much carbon fiber as possible, and to be honest I just wanted to see if I could do it and make it work (which is why were all on this forum! ). Oh, and that genuine vw one in the last pic is being sold for around £750 and there’s no way i’m paying that kind of money!

It’s taken a lot of work as all i had to go on was the distance that the two cables move, which is about 30mm side to side and 50mm back and forward (just to be sure i designed it with adjustable leverage, so in theory it should fit other cars with cable change gearboxes…). All the pivots use sealed bearings and the hardest part was figuring out how to mount the carbon tube gear lever without putting a hole through it.

That large part in the first pic was moulded in one piece, it’s 8.05mm thick and has 45 layers of 200gsm carbon tape and there were 89 seperate pieces of tape to wet layup. And i was amazed when it came out first time! (do i get an award for the highest number of pieces to make the smallest part!!)
It’s going to take a while to finish is but it’s getting there.

Yes, I made it with a 6 piece aluminium tool that i built.

yyyeah. You win.

That is definately a complicated project Paul, keep the pics coming it`ll be very interesting to see the finished part.

That totaly gave me penis envy…

I’ve now trimmed the carbon front section of the gear lever, there’s a few small pinholes in it but I don’t think it looks to bad.

Here’s a few pics of the cross section. No voids, so i’m happy.
Managed to cut it up with my band saw and finished the edges with some 120 grit then 320 grit emery cloth.

Looking fantastic paul, got to admire your dedication to attempt this project. I am looking forward to seeing this grow. Keep the pics coming m8.
