My first attempt working with composites.

I’ve been interested in composites for a while and recently decided to buy some scrap CF cloth and cheap resin on Ebay and play around a bit.

I’ve been reading “Competition Car Composites” and “Fiberglass and Other Composite Materials” trying to gain a bit more knowledge.

My first attempts are just flat CF plate made on a piece of windowpane and I used Meguiars Carnuba car wax.

My super simple and cheap setup:

I played around using multiple layers and made a few plates with 1 layer of CF and 3 layers of chopped strand mat. This stuff is strong! Here are a few of my first pieces:

This forum is a great resource, and I plan on getting some more equipment and nicer materials to play around with.

Nice! First bit made, and already on a car!!!
Good luck with the hobby, we are always here to help!

Glad you are here!

To cut out circle disc…what I have done before (but it takes practice) is to use a hole saw without the center drill bit and rotate is backwards…

Thanks for the comments and for the hole saw tip.

I ended up using a dremel to cut out the rough shape (you can see the cuts in the picture), then hot glued it to a grinding bit. I threw that in a drill, and smoothed it out using some sandpaper. It’s not 100% round, but it worked fine for center caps.
