MX5 (miata) mk3 boot spoiler build

Hi everyone, i’m having a go at making this ducktail style boot spoiler, i used laser cut 2mm hardboard templates to create the pattern.

i spaced out the templates on the boot lid (trunk lid) at 50mm intervals with PU foam blocks hot glued in-between, trimmed and sanded the foam down to the templates, skimmed with body filler and brushed on a primer pattern coat,

so here’s where i am at the moment, sanding the plug smooth.

comments are welcome!

Nice job, that’s exactly how I made a boot lip for a Supra

I’m starting to think about how to make the mold from this? it’s going to need to be 2 or 3 pieces i guess, where is best to make the split lines?

Just watched a video and they put the split lines on the edge, or radius corners so its easier to prep once the part comes out of the mould. Makes sense to do it like that when possible.

That looks pretty sweet.

I would think that the split line along the edge would be best? Depending on how nice the two halves fit together, the split line should be minimal. Sand it down some and it should be gone before painting.

Something like this?

Can anyone help me please?
Would i need a 3 / 4 piece mould like this in order to release the part?

Might it be better to mould it in 2 pieces and bond them together after?

For me, I think this method looks the best, remember, there are many ways to skin a cat, but If I were making this tool, I’d do it this way.

Here’s how i intend to make the mould for 1st piece

what is the plastic sheet for?

also, you’re putting wax into that bottom radius to keep it from undercutting? it’s hard to see in the drawing since scales are difficult to render out.

looks pretty good.

The idea of the polypropylene sheet is to a)bring the height of the barrier up to the centre of the radius and b) because it’s a smooth self releasing surface.
The wax is to fill any gaps left between the sheet and the plug.

Oh I"m thinking film… yah your using sheet to build it up. I’ve done similar but i usually use clay if the part has a rolled edge. If the part has a sharp edge I just glue plastic strips as you’ve done, to the flat face. Then I either folded over the first ply to wrap around the stack, or layed up over the edge and trimmed to end of part.

looking forward to seeing your part.

Cant wait to see the finish product!
