Mould release issues (Fibre break through and resin left on mould)

Hello guys,

We have infused our first part (Carbon Exhaust Shield) and cannot believe how good the results are! However, the first part was perfect and anything we now pull from the mould looks terrible. We have noticed on the 2nd and 3rd pull from the mould there is fibre break through the resin. Resin is also dotted on the mould in a twill pattern. We have not changed any methods on the 3rd attempt we waxed the mould for 3 hours!

Our infusion resin is polyester http://www.ecfibreglasssupplies.co.uk/p-1893-polyester-infusion-resin-including-catalyst.aspx

Mould is made from this tooling gel coat.

Release agent is Honeywax.

We have now trashed the mould due to how difficult it was to remove.

I would really like to know why this has happenedas I cannot understand how we made our first part from the mould so perfect and everything after that rubbish!

Only other ideas would be to wax and pva or use a semi permanent release agent.

You want to use Sealer and Semi-Permanent Release. Works a lot better then just wax. I get about 15-20 pulls from my production molds with the release I use.

I only use wax to removed the streaks left behind from the Semi-Permanent Release and when building molds and on the plug. This is what I use but there are so many other good releases and sealers out there also.

Hi Wade!

I second on the semi-perm.

Actually, I can recommend a product from Ferro (France / Spain, but we have it available as well).

The FS-10 series perform very well (cleaner, sealer, release) but the nice thing is that the release also dissolves resin that might have stayed in the mould, or on edges. This keeps your mould clean and in top condition.

If you need an address, please let me know.
