mould finishing

i have made what I would say is a 90% succesful mould, its not perfect but im happy and its one of my better ones.

its a spark plug cover for a mitsubishi evo 4 -9 sparkplug cover:)

now i have 2 options

  1. fill the chips with gel coat and flat them back.

  2. fill the mold with filler, an primer and paint the mould:(

im geting btter with every mould but not there yet any way here is the pics

helllpppppp:(

personally if it was me I would remake the mold. its so small, youll spend more time fixing then to remake. Now you have a chance to learn from your mistakes and make a flawless mold. did it stick to the plug? or did you have airvoids? What release did you use?

Im guessing that those bits chipped off when you took the plug out. Most likely caused because a small amount of gel coat had bleed between the plug and the flange that you had put on it? how did you join the flange to the plug? any clay or plastercine around the join? other than these chips it looks decent enough, not sure about the colour tho  lol

the light dosent help. TR mould release, maybe should of of used a bit of pva. im not going to make another.

ill think ill fill with gel coat and block them

try to rebuild the areas with tooling bog - i like to use tooling mixed with q-cell, to make quite a solid-ish bog that i watch, then while its curing carve it down with a stanley knife or equivalent [the less sanding i have to do inside a mould the better lol]

Overall it’s not too bad. I would recommend just making another one, as it will be faster and have a better finish than reworking this bad one.
Pay more attention to proper gelcoat thickness, and work out all air bubbles from the first thin layer of mat. And whatever you do, stay away from pva!

Something small like that, I would just throw it away and make another. In my experience it’s easier than trying to repair a mould.
