Mold Reinforcement

Hey everyone.

I am making a mold tonight (I hope). I normally use resin and fiberglass on the back to reinforce the mold. My questions are below:

  1. My molds are epoxy, can I use any resin or do I need to use an epoxy resin? I don’t want to use my good infusion resin and was going to stop at home depot and pick up a quart of the resin they sell.

  2. Are there any other options for reinforcing the mold? I have see Bondo used but not see if it’s a good idea.

I infuse all my moulds. You can use any other epoxy if you make a mould. But I think a mould is the wrong part to save money.
If you want to temper in the mould ytake care for the tg.

Im not too concerned with saving money. My real question is weather any resin will work on the back of the mold as reinforcement? I just don’t want to make the mold and lay the epoxy and then have the mold destroyed because I didn’t use the correct resin.

Usually the cheap polyester resin like Bondo have a much higher shrinkage rate than epoxy. This means that there can end up being more internal tension within the mold that leads to warping. Epoxy resins typically have a lower shrinkage rate than PE and VE…although some of the newer VE tooling resins are looking promising.

You lay the fabric over your plugs and infuse the actual mold? Or you just infuse the parts in the mold?

Sorry to change subjects, just am curious :).

I paint the mould resin on the plug and put a lot of cotton flocks over it. When it is cured I take a vac cleaner and get off all dry cotton flocks.
Than I place the dry fabrics over the plug and cured resin and infuse the mould over the plug.

I would love to see a video or get some pictures of this process. I have searched but unable to find any other documentation of infusing to make a mold.
