Mold Question

How would you make the inner mold and how would you do the lay up for this part? Make the part in two pieces and then “glue” it together … like make the top , then the bottom lengthwise like they did? Or is there a good economical way to make the part in one piece not using a foam or Aquacore inner mold.

Also since I am thinking of it… what chemical do you use to completely dissolve out styrofoam or urethane foam?

this is easy to do with pre-preg and an oven (luckily, I’ve got access to an autoclave to use, but an oven will work fine). make a mold for the top and the bottom then drill holes for bolts before you break them apart. Lay up one side at a time and then bolt it together. After everything is bolted together lay in approx 1inch strips along the seam, bag, cook and pop it out.

I’ve got an idea how to do it using wet lay up too, but I’ll leave that up to the imagination…

[edit] taking a better look at that second picture you can see the split line pretty clearly

if you want it seamless, then, 2 part mold like usual, wetted out carbon tube over a semi-inflated bladder, put it in, and inflate.

where do I purchase the bladder from?

Can I make a bladder from a car tire tube? Just cut the tube then seal the cut ends closed with heat and glue?

yep. dunno how much pressure it will hold (or your mold, either!) but i guess even under 1 bar would be ok…
